What is the Louisiana Birthday Rule for Medicare Supplement Plans?

The Louisiana birthday rule allows you to make changes to your Medicare Supplement plan each year, beginning 30 days before your birthday until 63 days after your birthday.

During this time, you can switch from your current Medicare Supplement plan to another of equal or lesser benefits through the same carrier. Additionally, your new policy must go into effect within 90 days of your birthday to be valid for this open enrollment period.

For example, if you currently have a Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan F, you may switch to a Mutual of Omaha Medigap Plan N without answering medical underwriting questions. However, you may not change from a Mutual of Omaha Medigap Plan F to a Cigna Medicare Supplement Plan G, as this would require switching carriers.

The Louisiana birthday rule allows you to save money on your Medicare Supplement plan each month by lowering your benefit level. The Louisiana birthday rule is also ideal for those still on Medicare Supplement Plan F.

With the inflation rate of 2022, Medicare Supplement premium costs are rising. So, you may save money while on Medigap Plan G – even if you currently have Plan F. The Louisiana birthday rule allows you to switch if your pre-existing health conditions would otherwise prevent you from passing underwriting.

Who is Eligible for the Louisiana Birthday Rule?

To qualify for the Louisiana Medicare Supplement birthday rule, you must already have a Medicare Supplement plan in Louisiana before your open enrollment window. If this is the case, you will automatically be eligible at the same time each year to make changes to your Medigap policy.

This enrollment period is not for those on a Medicare Advantage plan who wish to switch to a Medicare Supplement plan. Suppose you are looking to switch from Medicare Advantage to Medicare Supplement. In that case, you will need a valid reason to disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan, and you may need to answer underwriting health questions to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan.
