Phil Shapiro uses technology to spread learning and joy…and creates free games to encourage math skills.

Phil Shapiro has worked at the Takoma Park Maryland Library (TPML) for the past 20 years, helping children and adults learn how to use computers. When he’s not at work, he remains steadfast in his mission to champion outside-of-school learning by collecting and distributing used computers, making YouTube videos about open-source software, and creating free games that encourage a love of math.

Recently, the Library Journal awarded him with the Movers & Shakers 2024 Award (the people shaping the future of libraries), in the Educators category for his work on the Pairs Math Game. We caught up with Phil, an avid reader of seniorplanet.org’s editorial content, to talk about how he is using free technology to help spread learning – and fun.

What is the math game you invented?

I invented Pairs Math Game as a free, fun recreational math game that families can enjoy around the dining room table. The object is to find two numbers that add up to 100 — such as 80 + 20, or 95 + 5, or 45 + 55. Each of these I call “a pair.” Originally created for middle school students, I have since created a version for elementary and preschool students. All versions may be freely downloaded and printed from http://www.pairsmathgame.com

What is your goal by creating this game and distributing it for free?

Over the years, I’ve noticed that about 50 percent of the students who visit the public library where I work do not like math. My hope is that in playing this game, math phobia might be peeled away layer by layer. Too many students in school do not like math – yet, math can be very playful and enjoyable. This game might also be fun for older adults looking to exercise their minds and connect with their grandchildren.

What technology was involved in the creation of Pairs Math Game?

To create this game, I used the free software called LibreOffice Calc, which is similar to Excel.  Calc can quickly fill up a spreadsheet with random numbers. I then doctor those random numbers to make sure there are many solutions to the game – and that students do not feel frustrated looking for solutions.

What other technology do you enjoy using to create new things?

I use ChatGPT to assist me with writing short stories – I’ve written over 130 in the past year. Many of my stories spotlight different facets of human kindness. I wrote about my experience using generative AI to tap into my creativity here!

Our motto is “aging with attitude.” What does that mean to you?

Aging with attitude means taking control of your life to squeeze the most meaning and value from each day.
