Black History Month Extra!
Senior Planet has just finalized plans for two rare opportunities to explore some little known aspects of Black History via Zoom – no registration required!
February 26: Black History Month Virtual Tour of Memphis
Tour Memphis and its vital role African-American history virtually. Tour sites like the Mississippi Riverfront, the Slave Haven site that documents the history of the Underground Railroad, the site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Beale Street, officially named the “Home of the Blues” in a live, interactive presentation with photos, video and narration. Can’t join us live? Be on the lookout for a recording of this tour to be added to seniorplanet.org/travel for a limited time.
February 27: Freedman’s Bureau Transcribe-a-thon
Join the global effort to transcribe records from the Freedmen’s Bureau. Founded in 1865, the Bureau helped formerly enslaved African Americans transition to freedom. Staff from the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and the Smithsonian Transcription Center will teach participants how to transcribe these invaluable records and learn more about Freedmen’s Bureau history.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND JOIN US!
Both these sessions will be live streamed and will not be added to YouTube, so mark your calendars and join us for these unique and informative aspects of Black History.
